Disabilities, Access, and Functional Needs Support

Evac Chairs were provided through the STairway Emergency Evacuation for Disabilities (STEED) program. The District purchased an Evac Chair for each multiple story school to facilitate safe and effective emergency evacuation for all students, regardless of physical ability. An Evac Chair allows students with disabilities and health conditions to evacuate using the stairways in an emergency, providing disaster equity and access for our students. The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) created the STEED program to manage the shipping of Evac Chairs to schools and conducting the initial necessary training for school staff. The STEED program ended in June 2024. 

Please note the following requirements for schools that receive the rechargeable emergency power unit:

• Sign for the unit upon delivery.
• Charge the unit when received.
• Recharge the unit every 3 months.
• Evacuate the unit every time the student evacuates the building during an emergency or drill.
• Store the unit indoors in a location that can be accessed for evacuation.
• Use the unit indoors or outdoors as needed. It does not create fumes or noise. Unit is not waterproof and should be protected from the elements when used outdoors.
• Notify OEM for pick up of the unit when the student no longer attends the school.
