2015 RIF Hearing Daily Updates

Day 1: Monday, April 27, 2015There were ninety-one (91) respondents present today.The District wishes to thank employees who were able to attend the RIF Hearing. The District and UTLA reviewed the records for thirty-one (31) K-12 and Adult Education teachers and agreed that they met the competency criteria and have agreed to teach in that subject area for the 2015-2016 academic year.Although three (3) people were not on the list of participants to attend the RIF Hearing, there were able to participate in the proceedings.In addition, Opening Arguments were presented by United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) and Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)The next session is called for Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 9:00 AM. The District anticipates calling a first witness on Day 2.

Day 2: Tuesday, April 28, 2015The District began presenting its case. Thirty-two (32) documents were accepted into evidence. Testimony was provided by Justo Avila, Chief Human Resources Officer. It is anticipated that the District's first witness will continue providing testimony and the District will call a second witness on Day 3.Proceedings are scheduled to continue on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 9:00 AM.

Day 3: Wednesday, April 29, 2015The District's Chief of Human Resources, Justo Avila, continued his testimony. Gerardo Loera, Chief Academic Officer, also testified. Tomorrow, the District anticipates that Mr. Avila will continue his testimony and will call an additional witness.The next session is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 9:00 AM.

Day 4: Thursday, April 30, 2015The Chief of Human Resources, Justo Avila, concluded his testimony. Megan Reilly, the Chief Financial Officer, testified today as well.

Day 5 - 8: Friday, May 1, 2015 - Wednesday, May 6, 2015Testimony has been provided by eleven (11) witnesses including Donna Brashear, Executive Director Division of Adult and Career Education. The District will continue to call additional witnesses to testify through the remainder of this week.
The Administrative Law Judge made an official ruling to uphold the competency criteria as specified in the District’s March 10, 2015 Board of Education report. (Employees must serve at least one year of full-time experience within LAUSD within the preceding five years and possess the appropriate credential.)

Day 9-11: May 7, 2015 – May 11, 2015
18 witnesses have appeared.

Week 3: May 12, 2015 - May 15, 20151 witness testified. The hearing was not in session on May 13th and May 14th.
7 witnesses are scheduled to appear on May 18th.
The hearing is expected to conclude by May 22nd.
