    LAUSD Education & Awareness Initiatives

     
    Education & Awareness are crucial components of sustainability.  Sustainability Initiatives Unit strives to complement the District's core educational mission by identifying opportunities for education, training, and community engagement as we implement each of our initiatives.  From increasing eco-literacy through our DROPS Education & Outreach program to contributing to workforce development through our Prop 39 energy audit training program, awareness is at the core of our sustainability mission.

    HEROES for ZERO Contest

     

    Sustainability Initiatives Unit's HEROES for ZERO Contest registration is currently active!  The contest challenges K-12 students to help make their campuses Zero Net Energy-ready. Contestants will earn badges in all six HEROES categories, including:
     
    Health and wellness,
    Education,
    Recognizing partnerships,
    Optimizing performance,
    Energy efficiency, and
    Sharing best practices.

    GPRO

    The Green Professionals (GPRO) Fundamentals Training 2023-24 program (Program) is a professional development opportunity that will be offered to LAUSD’s teachers. Participants in the Program will learn the basics of sustainability and will be provided with an overview of the essential strategies and work practices that make buildings and campuses more efficient.     Drought Response Outreach Program for Schools (DROPS)

     
    LAUSD is partnering with Council for Watershed Health, TreePeople, and Los Angeles Audubon to provide the required education/awareness component of the DROPS storm water manag

    LAUSD EmPowered Schools 

     
    LAUSD is partnering with Alliance to Save Energy (ASE) to implement the EmPowered program.  LAUSD students enrolled in the program will be ambassadors for energy conservation on their campus and learn how to protect the environment while saving energy in their school and at home. The program will utilize an easy to navigate online portal to provide STEM-based curriculum; training, guidance and resources for teachers; hands-on, and student-led activities. The program also provides participating schools with a toolkit for conducting energy and water audits and an evaluation of each participating school’s energy use.     LADWP Resources for Students and Educators
     
    The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) offers educational resources to promote water conservation, sustainability, and utility management. Aimed at students and educators, these tools include interactive materials, presentations, classroom lessons, and hands-on activities that cover topics such as groundwater protection, innovative technologies, and the future role of utilities. LADWP also provides presentations aligned with educational goals, offers career exploration opportunities in the utility sector, and organizes educational tours and field trips in collaboration with Discovery Cube Los Angeles. Their resources cater to grades 4-12, enriching curriculum and fostering environmental stewardship.

    Grades of Green 

    Grades of Green offers fun and interactive toolkits to effectively broaden the environmental knowledge of K-12 students. The LAUNCH Eco-Toolkits (LAUNCH Program) are project-based lessons on environmental subjects including waste, water, plants & animals, energy, and transportation. Each module ranges in time, project intensity, and comes in a K-5 and 6-12 version. Each program is Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) aligned, includes all learning materials, worksheets, and a project based experiential learning element.
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
    USGBC-LA is offering a Green Schools Program

    USGBC-LA’s Green Schools Program is devoted to bringing the fundamentals of sustainability education to K-12 students and schools across the Greater Los Angeles region through workshops, volunteer opportunities, and micro-grants to provide sustainable solutions for campuses. The Sustainability Fundamentals education sessions consist of a high-level overview of sustainability concepts for primary and secondary school students. The 90-minute workshop is delivered in two 45-minute sessions by experts from USGBC-LA's member network of sustainability professionals. Join them in fostering more climate-conscious citizens and communities for our future, by enrolling your class for FREE and helping them spread the word at your school!

    AL GORE PRAISES LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT'S CLIMATE LITERACY EDUCATION

    In February 2022, the Board approved the Climate Literacy resolution, which aims to enact a comprehensive Climate Literacy program for Los Angeles Unified schools in order to help address the escalating climate crisis that is increasingly endangering Southern California, our nation, and our planet. 

    In December 2019, the Board approved the Clean Energy resolution, that commits Los Angeles Unified to 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2040.
