Continuation Schools

Our 39 Continuation High Schools provide comprehensive services to at-promise youth through the use of instructional strategies, flexible scheduling, and guidance and counseling services. They serve students who are 16 years of age or older, have not graduated from high school, are still required to attend school, and are at risk of not graduating. Students enrolled in a continuation high school must meet the same standards-based course and graduation requirements and participate in District and State-mandated testing to earn a high school diploma.

What makes a Continuation High School unique?

Required Attendance	Students are required to attend school 250 minutes daily; fewer minutes than the traditional school to allow for work and other other educational activities.
Curriculum & Instruction	Students receive standards-based curriculum through a combination of direct instruction and online courses in order to recover credits and be on track for graduation. Depending on which Continuation High School students attend, there are also opportunities for dual enrollment in local colleges, internships, and project-based learning.
Support Plans	Upon enrollment, Individualized Learning Plans are developed to address academic and social-emotional strength/needs, goals and supports.
Social Emotional & Academic Support	All schools provide guidance, tutoring, and counseling support.

Who is eligible to enroll in a Continuation High School?
- Students must be 16 years of age or older
- Students 18-19 years of age may be eligible if they have been continuously enrolled in a District school and have unusual educational needs, such as a limited number of courses to qualify for graduation.
- Students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) may attend a Continuation High School if their IEP specifies that a continuation high school setting meets the students’ needs.
How do you enroll in a Continuation High School?
- A student, in agreement with the parent, may transfer voluntarily to a continuation high school. A student who has voluntarily transferred shall have the right to return to the traditional high school at the beginning of the following semester or, with the consent of the traditional high school, at any time.
  - Students currently attending an LAUSD traditional high school should contact their current administration or counselor to request a transfer and coordinate an intake conference with the continuation high school of choice.
  - Students entering from independent charter high schools or other schools outside of LAUSD who now live within LAUSD boundaries may enroll directly in a Continuation High School with proper enrollment documentation, which includes verification of check-out from the previous school.
- Prior to enrollment, students and parents are expected to schedule an intake conference with the Continuation High School of choice. The purpose of the intake conference is to provide an opportunity to visit the school, meet with the principal, learn first-hand about the unique features and requirements of the school, and have the opportunity to ask and receive answers to their questions.
