Statement by Superintendent Austin Beutner
On Supervisor Janice Hahn’s Resolution
To Study School-Based Sites for COVID-19 Vaccination
LOS ANGELES (November 10, 2020) – The best way to provide much-needed health services to children is at schools, where they are almost every day. Los Angeles Unified is embarking on a nation-leading effort to provide testing for COVID-19 for students and staff at schools. This will help identify and isolate people with the virus or those they may have come in contact with and protect the health and safety of all in the school community. A school-based health system like this may also be the best way to provide a COVID-19 vaccine to children and families throughout the communities we serve. It wasn’t that long ago, in 1954, when the first children received a vaccine for polio at Arsenal Elementary School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Los Angeles Unified is committed to working with the County Board of Supervisors, health authorities and Los Angeles County in every way possible to help end the public health crisis so students can return to schools as soon as possible in the safest way possible.
