Board of Education Re-Elects Dr. Richard Vladovic as President,
Board Member Jackie Goldberg to Chair Committee of the Whole
LOS ANGELES (July 7, 2020) - School Board Member Dr. Richard Vladovic was unanimously re-elected by acclamation by his colleagues today as president of the Board of Education, the fourth time the South Bay native has served in the leadership post.
The retired educator has served on the Board since 2007. He represents Board District 7, which stretches from South Los Angeles to San Pedro and encompasses Lomita, Gardena and Carson.
Board Member Jackie Goldberg was unanimously re-elected as chair of the Committee of the Whole, which allows the Board to hold in-depth discussions and reviews of specific issues.
“I am humbled by the support of my fellow Board Members,” Board President Dr. Vladovic said. “I believe we need to move forward together, in unison. All seven Board Members and the Superintendent are committed to addressing the issues caused by this horrific pandemic we’re facing. We are dedicated to finding solutions that address the loss of instructional time for our most vulnerable students. I will continue to work in collaboration with the Superintendent as we navigate new situations and a new school year.”
“I thank my colleagues on the Board for my re-election as Chair of the Committee of the Whole,” Board Member Goldberg said. “My goal is to work with each person and our Board President, Dr. Vladovic, to identify the critical issues where there is agreement on the Board so that we can work as a unified entity on behalf of all our students and all of our Los Angeles Unified employees. There are many difficult challenges ahead, and I do believe this Board will rise to meet these demands.”
“Congratulations to Dr. Vladovic,” Superintendent Austin Beutner said. “I look forward to working with him and all of the Board Members to provide the best possible education to students. Schools face unprecedented challenges and it helps to have continuity in leadership during these trying times.”
“Consistency and stability in leadership are important as we continue to navigate our current reality,” Board Member Dr. George J. McKenna III said. “I look forward to continuing to serve with my colleagues as we advance the delivery of teaching and learning for our students.”
“The Board of Education has an important responsibility to increase access and equity for our students and families,” Board Member Mónica García said. “We must progress, and I congratulate Dr. Vladovic on his election to lead so that all students learn to read, write, think and believe.”
“Board Members Richard Vladovic and Jackie Goldberg are lifelong educators and leaders who have dedicated their careers to student achievement and equity in public education,” Board Member Scott M. Schmerelson said. “Both have contributed to increasing transparency, oversight and accountability to our governance process and procedures. I congratulate them on their appointments and look forward to working collaboratively with all my colleagues as we plan a return to teaching, learning and meeting the needs of our kids, families and staff who rely on Los Angeles Unified."
“The LA Unified Board is committed to helping our school communities navigate this unprecedented moment in our education system,” Board Member Nick Melvoin said. “I appreciate both Dr. Vladovic and Ms. Goldberg’s willingness to remain in their leadership roles as we continue our efforts to meet the needs of our families during this turbulent time.”
"I look forward to continue working with our Board President, Dr. Richard Vladovic,” Board Member Kelly Gonez said. “He has been a strong leader on the Board for many years, and I am confident that we will work together in partnership on behalf of all Los Angeles Unified students."
