Statement from Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner on Governor Gavin Newsom’s Proposed 2020-21 Budget

We thank Governor Gavin Newsom for a budget proposal that provides increases in financial support for our students, including funding for teacher training and money for school nutrition programs to mitigate the loss of federal dollars.

Under this plan, however, California’s public schools will remain woefully underfunded, especially when compared with the rest of the nation. New York provides in excess of $30,000 each year to educate a student while Los Angeles, under the proposed budget, will receive about $17,000. This budget proposal does not go far enough in funding supports for our most vulnerable students, including students whose families are experiencing homelessness and students with special needs.

We look forward to receiving additional details as more information becomes available.
