Los Angeles Unified Board of Education Unanimously Approves Board Member Nick Melvoin’s Resolution to Increase Equity in Parent Organizations (11-05-19)

LOS ANGELES, CA – Nov. 5, 2019 – The Los Angeles Unified Board of Education voted unanimously today to approve Board Member Nick Melvoin’s resolution to increase equity and reduce barriers to entry for parent and community organizations supporting our schools across Los Angeles Unified.

The resolution calls on the District to collect and analyze data on current parent group trends, as well as explore strategies to help underserved school communities form parent organizations, discover community partners and more equitably access resources for the benefit of students.

“We know that every parent wants to support the education of their child, but we also know that parent and community engagement doesn’t look the same at every school,” Board Member Melvoin said. “Our goal is to understand these disparities so we can create solutions that provide more equitable support to school communities responsive to local needs.”

“Moving toward equity is important across the district,” Board Member Mónica García said. “We must find different opportunities for parents to support their child and school.”

“As a lifelong educator, I know that parent organizations are essential for increasing parent engagement and support at every school site,” Board Member Scott M. Schmerelson said. “As a District, we must provide a one-stop-shop process for everyone. It is my hope that our staff will continue to work with our parent teacher organizations, parent teacher associations and booster partners to make this a reality.”

Nick Melvoin is proud to serve the dynamic communities of District 4 on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education. Nick’s election to the Board in May of 2017 follows a career fighting for our city’s schoolchildren. He believes that together, with the right leadership, we can ensure that every student in Los Angeles has the opportunity to succeed.
