Los Angeles Unified Board of Education Passes Resolution to Commemorate Classified School Employee Week
Los Angeles (May 7, 2024) - Los Angeles Unified School Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson sponsored a resolution today to celebrate the district’s classified staff, with co-sponsorship from all members of the board.
This resolution ensures that May 19 through May 25 is acknowledged as Classified School Employee Week throughout Los Angeles Unified, and calls for district schools to find creative ways to thank their classified staff through hand-drawn posters or other creative means, recognizing their work and efforts to make Los Angeles Unified a great place to learn.
“Our classified staff are at the forefront of our school district’s operations,” Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson said. “It is the bus drivers, cafeteria staff, custodial workers, office technicians, library aides, and all other classified employees who do the work to ensure that our students have a good experience at school. It is important for all of them to know that we value their work, whether they work during school hours or even late at night. They all do their part to make our district whole.”
“We are thankful for the dedication and service our classified employees provide to our students and school communities,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “From food service workers to school administrative assistants, to IT specialists and bus operators who safely transport our kids to school every day, our classified colleagues are the cornerstone of our educational mission, providing safe and welcoming learning environments for our scholars and all at Los Angeles Unified.”
“Classified Staff are truly the backbone of our schools and have been ‘empowering generations’ for years,” Board President Jackie Goldberg said. “I enthusiastically support Mr. Schmerelson’s Resolution to declare May 19-May 25, 2024 as Classified Staff Appreciation Week.”
“Many thanks to the District’s invaluable classified employees,” Dr. George McKenna III said. “Classified employees are the backbone of our District, providing the vital resources needed for children to learn and teachers to teach in clean, safe, well-organized environments. We are grateful for all they do to allow the District to thrive.”
“Our classified staff are the heart of our schools. Bus drivers, cafeteria workers, instructional aides, maintenance crews – they all work tirelessly behind the scenes,” Board Member Dr. Rocio Rivas said. “They create a safe, supportive environment where every student can thrive. This Classified School Employee Week, let's celebrate their dedication and the incredible impact they have on our children's success.”
“I'm glad to support this resolution, which formally recognizes and celebrates LA Unified's outstanding classified school employees,” Board Member Nick Melvoin said. “Their hard work and tireless commitment to our students, families, and community ensures that our schools run smoothly and provide an excellent education. Classified school employees not only support students inside and outside the classroom but are also essential to the daily operations of our schools, ensuring student safety and well-being. I look forward to celebrating May 19 through the 25th as Classified School Employee Week.”
“Every day, our classified staff make our school district stronger, safer, and a better place for students to learn and grow,” Board Member Kelly Gonez said. “I’m proud to cosponsor this resolution to recognize and celebrate all our classified staff do for our students and schools now and throughout the year.”
“To our classified staff: you help our schools and our district thrive, bringing warmth and care to every student, colleague, and community member, both in and out of the classroom,” Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. “I am inspired by your contributions and the lasting impact that you create in our schools and across our district. I celebrate you each and every day!”
“Thank you, Board Vice-President Schmerelson, for introducing a resolution recognizing our Los Angeles Unified family's often-unsung heroes,” Student Board Member Karen Ramirez said. “Our classified staff members play a crucial role in supporting students, from the bus drivers who ensure that we arrive at school safely and on time to the cafeteria workers who provide us with nutritious meals and the maintenance workers who keep our campuses clean and in good condition. We are truly thankful for their tireless efforts to improve our learning experience. This resolution acknowledges their contributions and brings attention to their valuable work.”
