Los Angeles Unified Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin Celebrates Her First 100 Days in Office
LOS ANGELES (March 25, 2021) — Today marks the 100th day into Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin’s first term serving Board District 7 (BD7) on the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education.
Ortiz Franklin ran for school board with a vision towards more LA Unified students on track to graduate fully prepared for college, career and life. Foundational to that commitment, she has prioritized teaching and learning by authoring her first resolution, “Exploring Mastery-Based Learning & Grading,” which was unanimously approved by the board on February 23. As a result of the global pandemic and distance learning, she has been focused on improving access to stable internet connectivity for all, particularly for our most historically neglected communities. She authored a second resolution, “Closing the Digital Divide to Improve Distance & Hybrid Learning,” which was also unanimously approved by the board on March 9.
As an educator and advocate, Ortiz Franklin understands the importance of continually listening to and leading alongside her community. To date, she has met with more than 400 students, families, educators and community members to discuss school reopening, distance learning, Black student achievement, equitable funding and the future of education in LA Unified.
Ortiz Franklin knows that the best solutions are made by those closest to the challenges and the best decisions in LA Unified are made by those who are closest to students. Since being elected, she has dedicated the majority of her time to visiting the highest-need schools in BD7. To date, she has visited virtually or in-person 111 schools, meeting with school staff, observing classroom instruction, talking with families, and participating in student assemblies and professional development. She is on target to accomplish her personal goal of visiting all schools in BD7 by June of this year.
Ortiz Franklin is the newest member of the LA Unified Board of Education representing Board District 7, where she was previously a student, teacher, teacher-educator and advocate. She is committed to ensuring all students graduate fully prepared to thrive in the college and career of their choice. LA Unified Board District 7 includes the diverse communities of South LA, Watts, Gardena, Carson, Lomita, Harbor City, Wilmington and San Pedro.
