I. Collect information related to private school students and the nature of the referral

  • Establish that the student is attending a private school: A private school is a private business or nonprofit entity, including religious schools or facilities, that offers or conducts full-time instruction with a full complement of subjects at the elementary, middle, or high school level. Private schools function outside the jurisdiction of the California Department of Education (CDE) and most state education regulations. Charter schools are public schools and are not covered under this policy. Private schools are usually funded through tuition charges or private benefactors. They are never directly publicly funded.
  • Determine where the private school is located: Using School Finder, enter the mailing address for the private school of attendance.
  • Verify student's residency status: Enter the student's home address into School Finder, and verify residency status in accordance with LAUSD procedures.
  • Obtain written consent to release confidential student records from parent(s)/legal guardian for current and past schools of attendance.
  • Provide a Parent’s Guide to Special Education Services (including Procedural Rights & Safeguards), to the parent(s)/legal guardians.
