  • Welcome

Our mission is to strengthen and faciliate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and by identifying and assisting in the elimination or modifications of health-related barriers to learning.

LAUSD School Nurses possess a California (CA) School Nurse Services Credential and are CA Registered Nurses (RN). School Nurses are members of a multidisciplinary team established to meet the health and educational needs of all LAUSD students. The program component includes health assessment, communicable disease control, state-mandated screenings, such as vision and scoliosis, first aid and disaster preparedness, immunization follow-up, child abuse reporting, suicide risk assessment, utilization of approved community resources, and health education of students and staff. School Nurses train, assign and supervise unlicensed personnel to provide Specialized Physical Health Care Services. They also focus on students' health and promote student attendance and achievement.

There are over 480 School Nurses who serve the health needs of more than 420,000 LAUSD students in a wide range of programs: Infant Special Education, Migrant Education Programs, Special Education and Early Education Centers.

LAUSD Struggling To Fill School Nurse Vacancies - ArticleFrom headaches to stomachaches and administering medication, the nurse’s office at Nimitz Middle School is a revolving door of students.

Time off is one of the selling points Dr. Bryan Johnson often mentions to prospective candidates. Right now he is in non-stop recruitment mode.

"We have about 70 nursing vacancies," Dr. Johnson said, "and we’re looking to hire at least that this year.”

The goal, laid out in the collective bargaining agreement early this year, is to have a full-time nurse at every school campus within three years. But the prognosis isn't good.

“It’s going to be a challenge to meet the goal," Dr. Johnson said.

It is a math problem. Dr. Johnson says there simply aren’t enough nurses to fill the positions – at the Los Angeles Unified School District or anywhere.
