Do Credentials and Add-ons earned through the LAUSD Intern Program, Teacher Induction, and/or its Added Authorization Programs allow me to teach in other regions in and throughout the state of California?

Credentials and Add-ons earned through the LAUSD Intern Program, Teacher Induction, and/or its Added Authorization Programs are granted by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). Credentials and Add-ons earned will allow you to teach in all regions in and throughout the state of California. Teachers with a California Teaching Credential may be able to teach in other states at the discretion of each state.

What if I am a contracted provisional teacher and I want to join the District Intern Program, what do I need to do?

The eligibility requirements are different for contracted provisional teachers. Please email recruit@lausd.net for details. Be sure to include your employee number in all correspondence.

Can emergency permit or substitute teachers apply?

Yes. Teachers contracted and serving on a full-time emergency permit or a pre-intern certificate are eligible to apply. In addition to meeting all of the admission requirements, a current recommendation from the school site administrator is required. Substitute teachers are eligible to apply provided they meet all of the admission requirements.

Do District Interns have Mentors?

District Interns are assigned Instructional Faculty Lead Mentors who are like-credentialed as the Intern they are supporting.

What are some of the advantages of the District Intern Program?

California Credential

Upon completion of the program requirements, Interns are recommended for a credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Tuition-Free Program

Participants in the District Intern Program do not incur costs for training, registration, or parking provided that they fulfill the commitment to teach within the District two additional years following completion of the program. Access to a computer and printer will be needed to fulfill course requirements.

Support

Each District Intern Program receives assistance and guidance from an experienced Instructional Faculty Lead Mentor throughout the entire program. Classes are taught by experienced Instructional Faculty members.

Salary

• District Interns are placed on the same salary table as all other contracted teachers in alternative certification programs.
• CENTSE District Interns may be placed on the same salary table as all other credentialed teachers.
• Previous experience, college units, and advance degree(s) may enhance entry-level salary.
• Credits earned for completion of classes in the Professional Development Plan (District Intern Program) will apply toward salary advancement.

May units taken in a university teacher preparation program be credited in lieu of District coursework?

No. However, upon approval, university units may be used for salary point credit and advancement on the salary schedule.

Do I have to pass the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) specialty examinations?

Yes. The District requires that applicants to the Preliminary Single Subject, Multiple Subject, and Education Specialist (MMD, MSD) program take and pass one or more of the CSET specialty examinations, or obtain a subject matter waiver, for acceptance into the District Intern Program.

Are waivers accepted in lieu of coursework or passing test scores?

Subject matter waivers are accepted for applicants who have completed a Single Subject major at an accredited California institution. A university subject matter waiver verification letter is required for documentation.

How can I prepare for the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) specialty examinations?

• Workshops are available from independent testing services.
• Study guides are available from testing agencies, local bookstores, and libraries.
• Call your local college or university for their schedule of preparation workshops.

Can I participate in the program if I already have a General Education Credential?

You would be welcome to apply for the CENTSE (Credentialed Educators Now Teaching Special Education) program.

What support will I receive?

District Interns receive assistance and guidance from experienced Instructional Faculty Lead Mentors throughout the entire program. All District Interns complete the Professional Development Plan in a supportive and collaborative cohort group.

Where are the District Interns assigned?

District Interns are not assigned but may be selected by any school in the Los Angeles Unified School District, based on the needs of the District. Eligibility is not a guarantee of employment.

Are transcripts available?

Yes. Upon completion of the program, each District Intern may request a transcript of all credits earned through the program.

Will there be any assessments?

• Yes. All Single Subject and Multiple Subject District Interns must take and pass the California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA) in order to be recommended for the Preliminary Credential.
• In addition, the Education Specialist and Multiple Subject District Interns may need to take and pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) in order to be recommended for the Preliminary Credential. CENTSE District Interns may be exempt from the RICA requirement.
•  District Interns must also pass all program course-specific assessments.

When and where are the classes held?

Pre-Service Orientation (comprised of 160 hours) lasts four weeks (Monday-Friday), generally from 8am to 5pm. During the school year, classes are held once a week in the evenings. All classes take place at Johnnie Cochran Middle School.

Is there a service requirement upon completion of the credential?

District Interns in the General Education Programs who complete the Preparation Program and are recommended for the Preliminary Credential must serve as teachers in an LAUSD General Education setting for two (2) additional years after receiving their Preliminary Credential. Education Specialist District Interns (including CENTSE) who complete the Preliminary Program and are recommended for the Preliminary Credential must serve as teachers in an LAUSD Special Education setting for two (2) additional years after receiving their Preliminary Credential. An employee who fails to complete the required post-credential service must reimburse the District’s cost of the training of $6,800 per year, with payment in full to be received by the District within one (1) calendar year.
