In accordance with federal and state laws and special education regulations, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), 2004, the District is committed to serving all students with disabilities in the educational placement that is determined to be the least restrictive environment (LRE) by the IEP team. While the majority of students have needs that can be met at the school of residence, in rare circumstances, the school of residence may not appear to be an appropriate educational environment.

In accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) § 300.114 (a) (2), “Each public agency must ensure that –
    (i) To the maximum extent appropriate, children with disabilities, including children in public or private institutions or other care facilities, are educated with children who are nondisabled; and
(ii) Special classes, separate schooling, or other removal of children with disabilities from the regular educational environment occurs only if the nature or severity of the disability is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily.”
SESC-Operations highly trained Program Specialists assist IEP teams with reviewing FAPE options available within LAUSD in order to meet the individual educational needs of the students with disabilities. For more information parents may request to discuss placement options with an IEP team at the student’s current school of attendance. School staff may use the following resources for more information and guidance.
