    Background

The Climate Literacy Task Force (CLTF) was established to support the goals of the Climate Literacy Resolution adopted in February 2022. The resolution aims to integrate climate literacy and climate justice into all subject matters at district schools to prepare students to be ready for the world and its climate concerns. The resolution emphasizes outdoor learning, climate justice, green jobs, and career preparation.

The Climate Literacy Resolution effort was championed by the Climate Curricula Committee of the Los Angeles chapter, the Climate Reality Project (CRP-LA) founded by former Vice President Al Gore. The committee was formed in 2021 by LAUSD retired teacher and committee Chairperson, Lucy Garcia. The committee included educators, climate specialists, and community members with a passion for integrating climate learning and climate justice into all subjects across all grades in LAUSD.

In April 2023, LAUSD and the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) formed a mutual agreement titled "Healthy Green Public Schools," which called for four items; 1. Establishing a Climate Literacy Task Force, 2. Designating a Climate Champion at district schools, 3. Providing a stipend to Climate Champions, and 4. Establishing a Health and Nutrition Task Force.

In accordance with item one (1) of the LAUSD-UTLA agreement, the Climate Literacy Task Force is to be comprised of up to four (4) members appointed by the Division of Instruction, up to four (4) classified members, and up to four (4) UTLA appointees was to be established to meet four times per year to consult and provide recommendations on the objectives outlined in the agreement. The objective of each task outlined in the agreement is to produce a recommendation, or list of recommendations, to submit to the Chief Eco-Sustainability Officer no later than June 30, 2024.

As such, the CLTF was formed and consists of the members below.
