Individuals looking to pursue a career in teaching may be subject to California Educator Credentialing Assessments that aim to assess basic skills and subject matter competency. California prepared teachers must demonstrate basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics; show subject matter competency in the desired credential area; and in some cases, demonstrate their competence in the teaching of reading. Career Ladder members may receive test fee reimbursement or test fee waivers for required credentialing exams. Test preparation courses and/or materials are also reimbursable.
There are several ways to satisfy the basic skills and subject matter requirements. It is advisable to consult with a Career Ladder Specialist prior to taking any credentialing assessment, to determine which assessment is appropriate.
Test Preparation
Career Ladder's Study Materials And Resources for Tests (SMART) program offers instructor-led and self-directed test preparation courses. Members in good standing have priority enrollment for these courses and the cost of the courses is deducted from the member's annual allowance without any upfront cost to the member. Members may participate in as many test preparation opportunities as needed, as long as there are funds available in their annual allowance.
