LAUSD Magnet schools offer theme based instruction with high quality teachers that will meet the needs of your child. Our schools foster creativity and will prepare your child for college and career.
The LAUSD Magnet Program is a court-ordered voluntary integration opportunity available to all students in grades K-12 who live within the boundaries of LAUSD. The purpose is to provide an integrated educational and personal experience which prepares them to function in a diverse society, and helps to eliminate, reduce or prevent long-standing patterns of racial isolation. Magnet School openings are determined by the need to maintain a racially balanced enrollment and by available space. Only gifted, high ability, highly gifted Magnets require specific eligibility criteria.

SIS believes that by offering thematic instruction and student choice, magnet programs will provide pathways that prepare students to pursue innovative careers in our evolving global economy.
What is a Magnet School?
Magnet schools occupy entire school campuses (i.e. Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School).
What is a Magnet Center?
Magnet centers are co-located on a LAUSD school campus with access to activities and experiences shared with the host school (i.e. Millikan Middle School Performing Arts Magnet). Some schools host as many as three Magnet centers on their school campus (i.e. Van Nuys High School Medical Magnet; Math, Science and Technology Magnet and Performing Arts Magnet).
Does a Magnet School provide transportation?
District-paid transportation may be provided for ELEMENTARY (K-5) magnet students if they reside outside a 1-mile radius of the magnet school they attend. SECONDARY (6-12) students may be eligible for transportation to a magnet school if the student resides outside of a 3-mile radius. Not all Magnets have a transportation route established. Contact the transportation department before applying (1-800-LA-BUSES).
