A Message from Board Member Tanya Ortiz FranklinDear Board District 7 (BD7) community,
The first month of 2024 came with amazing joys: the return of students to school, the LA Unified All-City Marching Band participating in the Rose and MLK Kingdom Day Parade, LA Unified expanding transportation to students, parent leaders uplifting their voices, and much more. The enthusiasm from everyone has been truly inspiring. Let’s carry this momentum forward as we embark on a semester filled with growth, learning, and shared achievements.
In this issue, we highlight College Signing Day updates, our Tea with Tanya with our BD7 team, LAUSD updates – including the Strategic Plan 1 Year Progress report – and other happenings in BD7.

| Our 4th annual College Signing Day event is just three months away! BD7 students and their families are invited to join us on April 27, 2024 from 10 am-1 pm at CSU Dominguez Hills to celebrate our seniors' college commitments and the college and career aspirations of all our students. Last year, over 2000 students and family members attended the event, featuring a resource fair with 40+ colleges and community organizations, live music, student performances, food, giveaways, and more! This month we celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., reminding us about the progress we have made and how together we can continue to ensure our communities are more just and equitable.

We want to highlight our outstanding Special Education Administrator, Jennifer McConn for her dedication and commitment to our Special Education Department. “I am eternally grateful for the Division of Special Education teams I supervise and collaborate with who work to meet the needs of students, families, and staff,” McConn said. “This is especially true for our Region South team including our APEIS and Itinerant Resource Teachers. I can’t do it alone and I am in awe of all they do! In some ways the Special Education team is the entire District because students with disabilities are general education students first. They are educated in a range of settings (most in the general education setting) and may also be counted among other groups such as Gifted and Talented (GATE), Emergent Bilingual, Homeless/Foster Youth and those supported by our Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP). I am continually appreciative of the dedication, hard work, and grace our District staff display at all levels of our organization as we work coherently together toward meeting our goals.” She expresses her appreciation with this quote from Danny Steele and Todd Whitaker: “Administrators should be inspired by the teachers in their building...if they’re not they need to figure out a different way to lead.” This speaks to appreciating and building upon the unique skills and talents everyone can contribute.

| Our Transportation Office is expanding its route offerings for families concerned with safe passage. Families can complete a form (one per student) and request that their student be picked up at a nearby school or cross street. To learn more click here.
