As part of Los Angeles Unified’s commitment to graduate every student college-prepared and career-ready, the district has adopted October as College Awareness Month.
The Division of Instruction has a post-secondary website with resources to help students fulfill their dream of a college education. For instance, Naviance helps students in Grades 8-12 identify their strengths, discover careers and prepare for post-secondary programs.
GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, works to address challenges faced by low-income, first-generation and minority students with counseling and other supports.
October is the time that current and prospective college students and their families can begin completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for federal grants, loans and work-study for the 2021-2022 school year. The economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic is expected to create a greater need for financial aid, so it’s important that students complete the FAFSA as soon as possible.
