Chiquita Adds Fresh Bananas to the Menu for Students
- 144,000 Bananas Donated to Los Angeles Unified’s 63 Grab and Go Food Centers
- Los Angeles Unified Has Provided Almost 5 Million Meals to Those In Need
LOS ANGELES – APRIL 6, 2020 – Los Angeles Unified School District, the largest school district in California and the second largest in the nation, announced today that Chiquita Brands (NYSE: CQB) has donated 144,000 fresh bananas that will be served to students and families at its 63 Grab & Go Food Centers.
“Schools are the center of the communities we serve and provide an important part of the social safety net for many students and their families,” Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner said. “Our Grab and Go Food Centers are helping those in need and we’re pleased to add fresh bananas to the menu.”
“As the world’s leading banana company, we have a responsibility to act as a ‘good neighbor’ and provide access to fresh and nutritious bananas to families – not only year-round, but especially during the current situation where many families with children have been impacted by school closures,” said Tina Varjabedian, Marketing Manager North America for Chiquita. “We are fortunate that we are able to donate fresh bananas to Los Angeles Unified and provide the much-needed nutrition for these children, while also hopefully putting a smile on their faces during these unprecedented times.”
Chiquita has donated more than a half-million bananas to school districts on the West Coast, including six in the Los Angeles metropolitan region.
Chiquita also has a variety of interactive online puzzles, games and recipes for families looking for activities while they remain at home, which can be found at Chiquita.com/playwithchiquita.
