Los Angeles Unified Board of Education Unanimously Approves Board Member Nick Melvoin and Board Vice President Jackie Goldberg’s Resolution to Provide Grants for Co-located Schools
LOS ANGELES, CA (October 1, 2019) – The Los Angeles Unified Board of Education voted unanimously today to approve Board Member Nick Melvoin’s and Board Vice President Jackie Goldberg’s resolution to provide funding for grant opportunities to ease the burden of charter school co-location for district schools.
Co-sponsored by Board Members Mónica García and Dr. George J. McKenna III, the resolution will provide $5.5 million for co-located campuses to apply for projects that will support the learning and environment for all students on a campus—charter and district. This funding will come out of bond money that has been set aside to support charter schools.
“No one likes co-locations, but we can do more to provide support to our district schools by easing the burden of sharing a campus,” Board Member Melvoin said. “We can help the day-to-day operations run a little more smoothly and maybe even promote a new spirit of collaboration at the co-located schools.”
“This resolution is about supporting collaboration and improving school environments,” Board Vice President Goldberg said. “We want to find out if there are ideas out there about how to work together. An adversarial relationship between charters and district school is never good for children. This resolution takes us in the right direction.”
"I have been saying for some time now that the arranged marriage between district schools and charter schools is not the ideal arrangement given the logistical and philosophical issues that continue to be a cause of concern,” Board President Dr. Richard Vladovic said. “However, I do support measure that will minimally create a more equitable distribution of resources for campuses home to district and charter school organizations."
“It’s creative – I’m looking forward to our school communities coming together for solutions,” Board Member Mónica García said. “It’s our belief in all kids that will continue to move our district toward equity and excellence. I hope that schools take full advantage of this new, collaborative opportunity.”
“There are facilities needs at every school across our district, but the needs are heightened when our campuses are shared,” Board Member Kelly Gonez said. “I’m glad that we’re taking steps to provide upgrades and more supports for our district schools that are managing a colocation, so that they can improve their campuses on behalf of our students.”
“Success at every one of our schools begins with making sure every classroom is a great learning environment,” Superintendent Austin Beutner said. “This will help provide additional resources at schools.”
Nick Melvoin is proud to serve the dynamic communities of District 4 on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education. Nick’s election to the Board in May of 2017 follows a career fighting for our city’s schoolchildren. He believes that together, with the right leadership, we can ensure that every student in Los Angeles has the opportunity to succeed. Los Angeles Unified Board District 4 includes the communities of Brentwood, Del Rey, East Hollywood, Encino, Hollywood, Mar Vista, Marina Del Rey, Pacific Palisades, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, Tarzana, Toluca Lake, Topanga, Westchester, West Hollywood, Westwood, Woodland Hills, and Venice.
