Los Angeles Unified Welcomes Dr. Lourdes Ramirez-Ortiz
as the New Region East Superintendent
Los Angeles, CA (June 4, 2025) – Today, the Board of Education approved Dr. Lourdes Ramirez Ortiz, current Administrator of Instruction, to serve as the next Region East Superintendent, effective July 1, 2025. Region East includes 256 schools and nearly 107,000 students across communities stretching from Downtown and South Los Angeles to East Los Angeles, and Cudahay, Bell, South Gate, Maywood, Huntington Park, Vernon, and Walnut Park.
Mr. Jose P. Huerta is retiring after a remarkable 34-year career with the District, having served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and administrator. His impact on students, staff, and families has been profound, and we thank him for his unwavering commitment.
Dr. Lourdes Ramirez-Ortiz brings nearly 30 years of experience in public education, rooted in equity, instructional excellence, and student success. She began her career as a paraeducator at City Terrace Elementary and has served in roles including teacher, literacy coach, principal, director, and Community of Schools Administrator. In addition to her work in the District, Dr. Ramirez-Ortiz has served as a statewide consultant and graduate lecturer at Cal State LA. She holds a B.A. in Child Development, a BCLAD in Spanish, an M.A. in Educational Administration, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership.
