L.A. Unified Board Approves Funding for Palisades Schools Rebuilding Efforts
LOS ANGELES, CA — June 3, 2025 — The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education has unanimously approved $600 million in funding to support the rebuilding efforts of the three schools devastated by the recent Palisades Fire. These investments will be largely funded by the Measure US facilities bond that voters passed last November.
Marquez Elementary and Palisades Elementary, both of which were largely destroyed in January’s wildfire, will be entirely rebuilt with modern and more climate-resilient campuses. Palisades Charter High School, which sustained significant damage, will undergo major repairs and upgrades to restore and improve learning spaces for its students.
“This investment is about more than just buildings—it’s about restoring a sense of normalcy, safety, and hope for our students and families,” said Board Member Nick Melvoin, who represents the affected area. “We’re moving forward with urgency to bring students back to safe, modern campuses that are built to withstand future challenges.”
“In the wake of the Palisades Fire, our commitment to students, families, and educators is unwavering,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “The unanimous vote to invest $600 million in rebuilding these schools is an appropriate investment to meet the emerging needs of young families, especially those following generations who have long called this community home. Few school communities have endured the dual loss of both their homes and schools. This is not just about restoring buildings – it’s about restoring hope, opportunity, community, and a sense of normalcy. Los Angeles Unified is building back stronger, safer, and with a vision for the future that every child deserves.”
The District has committed to an ambitious timeline to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible, with a continued focus on resilience, sustainability, and meeting the evolving needs of each school community. To date, there have been more than a dozen school and community meetings to provide information and elicit feedback for every stage of this process.
